Staff correspondent, The Daily Star, The Bangabandhu satellite 1- is the first Bangladeshi geostationary communications and Broadcasting Satellite. It is named after the father of the nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It is designed and manufactured by Thales Alenia Space and launched by a Falcon 9 Block 5 rocket of Space X. The total cost of the satellite was projected to be 248 million US dollars in 2015 (Tk 19.51 billion). It predicted life span to exceed 15 years. The project is being implemented by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory commission (BTRC)working hand- in- hand with Us based Space partnership International , LLC.

Bangabandhu Satellite -1 (BS-1) is considered as stepping Stone for Bangladesh in the digital era. With the successful launch and positioning in orbit, this is a formal journey towards the space - age for this nascent country that became independent only 47 years back. Bangabandhu satellite -1 launched from kennedy space center on Merritt Island, Florida, USA and primary Ground Station in Gazipur, Dhaka and Secondary Ground Station at Betbunia, Rangamati. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed her firm conviction that Bangabandhu Satellite -1 would play a pivotal role in overall development of the country.
Through the satellite we will be able to know the whole world and our children will be able to learn about space and nuclear technology, marine science and other areas of science, culture and nature which will be useful for them as well as the country 's Development, the PM said. Bangladesh has emerged as the 57th country having satellite in space and the 34th nation to have constructed nuclear power plant
